Resources: Skillpop & Makerspace
Are you struggling to find ways to learn new things? Last week, we challenged everyone to find resources that can help them grow, so we thought we’d share what we found!
Skillpop
Skillpop offers a variety of classes at an affordable price. The offerings range from candle making to learning the basics of Adobe InDesign. Classes are usually only around two hours, but packed with great information! And if you don’t find a class to fit your schedule or interests, they’re always changing month to month, so you can check back in. This is an easy way to learn more about something maybe you’ve thought about, but didn’t know how to go about starting. For me, I’ve been interested in jewelry making. However, that takes a lot of tools and know-how-- things I don’t have. But, I can find a SkillPop class, and they’d provide everything I need to get started. And if I discover I hate it? Well, then I know not waste any more time or money continuing.
Makerspace
Makerspace offers the same concept as Skillpop, but is for the more hands-on creator. These spaces offer machines and tools for those who’d like to learn more about woodworking, ceramics, or anything else that requires serious equipment. They provide the expensive tools for you to use, so you don’t have to go out and spend a ton of money. Besides who has the space to house those kinds of items? And if you really discover a new hobby you love that you are ready to take to the next level, they even have dedicated artisan spaces that you can rent! If you’re interested in learning more, check out their site! The closest Makerspace to me is currently offering a Woodshop Basics Class, Cutting Board Course, and a Coffee Table Course!
A lot of times I think we are scared of the time commitment or financial investment it would take to start a new hobby. And we get overwhelmed by all the things we need to do just to get started that we never actually get going. But if you can commit to a short introductory class, you’ll lessen the financial burden, stress, and confusion by learning just enough to find out if it’s something you should pursue! These are just two options you can take to learn a new skill and broaden your horizons. Don’t get stuck in what you already know; stretch yourself, grow!
